Scholarships

We have three endowed scholarships at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. These are awarded annually to worthy applicants in need of financial aid. They are:

Bonnie Cone Altrusa Club Scholarship: The scholarship was established in 1983 in honor of Dr. Bonnie Ethel Cone who was instrumental in the growth and development of UNC-Charlotte. Dr. Bonnie was an active Altrusan for over 50 years. She was also a former President of Charlotte College (the beginning of UNCC), acting Chancellor of UNCC and Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. This Altrusa scholarship honors her as a Patron of Excellence for the Foundation of UNC-Charlotte.

Mildred English Altrusa Scholarship: Developed in 1950, the Altrusa Club of Charlotte Scholarship fund established the FIRST scholarship designated to provide financial support at Charlotte College.

In 2006, this scholarship was renamed in honor of Altrusan Mildred English. Mildred has long been one of the University’s biggest supporters with her time, attendance and financial support. In her 49th year as an Altrusan, our club decided to honor her by naming the scholarship at UNCC – also known as the Forty-Niners – in her honor….from one Forty-Niner to another Forty-Niner!

Viola Billue Altrusa Scholarship: Altrusa Club of Charlotte was the beneficiary of funds from the estate of Viola Billue, a former Altrusan, and Club President. Viola was the first female bank vice president in the Charlotte area.

In addition, the club awards additional cash scholarship during the year. Our most recent was a $1000 scholarship for a nursing student in the area.
